I remember the first time I took my daughters to the Caribbean Carnival Grande Parade on Lakeshore Blvd. It was amazing – the sights, sounds and smells bathed us in the islands’ culture, beauty, music and food. It was a total sensory experience. We loved it.

I can’t fully replicate that feeling on the radio. But if you’d like to try – at least the fabulous reggae music – I can extend the 3 weeks of the Caribbean Carnival into Sunday afternoon. Please tune in for my next Vintage Favourites’ music genre adventure – into reggae-pop music. It came out of the West Indies in the late 60s with songs by Desmond Dekker, Jimmy Cliff and Johnny Nash, and by the mid-70s was a major influence on pop stars from Eric Clapton and Paul Simon to Stevie Wonder, Blondie and Bruce Cockburn.

It’s been a ‘hot-hot-hot’ summer so the ‘Reggae Music Edition’ should feel just right this Sunday at 2pm. You supply the drinks with the tiny umbrellas, and I’ll bring the music. Cheers. – Gene
