Remembering 9/11 in Song

It was one of the darkest days in history. ‘9/11’ forever changed our world, and our lives. Politicians, historians, teachers and scholars; films and TV docs, books and magazines have all reported, commented, analyzed and interpreted that terrible day and its after-effects.  So have musicians – and that’s what I’m featuring on the next ‘Vintage Favourites’. Nine special songs by some of our top artists – Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, David Clayton-Thomas, Sarah McLachlan, and others.  They reflect and remember, they soothe and inspire – as only music can.  I hope you’ll join me for this 20th anniversary salute to the music of ‘9/11’.

There’s much poignancy in this edition, as even our first-hour feature – ‘This Week in Zoomer Music‘ – celebrates the birthdays of three legends, each born this week, and each who died in plane crashes: Buddy Holly, Patsy Cline and Otis Redding. Freddie Mercury would be turning 75 this week. And Princess Diana’s funeral was this week in 1997. Elton John recorded his reworked ‘Candle in the Wind ’97’  – and the worldwide outpouring of grief for Diana ensured his tribute would become the all-time top-selling record.  I’ll tell you more in this week’s ‘Story Behind the Song‘.

We’ll also go back 65 years to the historic first performance of Elvis on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1956, and we’ll wrap up the show with a half-hour birthday salute to Michael Buble.  That’s all on the next ‘Vintage Favourites’ this Sunday, September 5th, from 2:00 to 4:30.
