SALUTE TO NORM EDWARDS!

I’ve got a very special edition of ‘Vintage Favourites’ this Sunday – a farewell to a good pal, a respected team-mate, and a friendly familiar voice to hundreds of thousands of listeners. Norm Edwards – co-host of our ‘Afternoon Express’ these past 14 years with Zoomer Radio, and the previous 8 as ‘AM 740’ since our launch in 2001 – and even before then with the original Oakville radio station. In fact, Norm Edwards is ‘The Original’ – the longest-serving AM 740/Zoomer Radio staffer.

Norm announced his retirement recently, and I wanted to make sure we hear his story, play some of his favourite songs and share some ‘tall-tales’. It’ll be a great show and I hope you’ll tune in for our ‘Vintage Favourites Salute to Norm Edwards‘ starting right after the 3 o’clock news.

In our show’s first hour (2-3pm.), ‘This Week in Zoomer Music‘ recalls Buddy Holly’s last formal recording session, and the strange story of David Box – a young fan of Holly’s, who sang just like him, played with the Crickets, and then died – just like Buddy, in a plane crash this week in 1964. I’ll salute Chuck Berry on what would’ve been his 95th birthday, remember the first single Jimi Hendrix recorded 55 years ago this week, and note songwriter Keith Reid’s 75th birthday.  Who’s he? He’s the lyricist who wrote ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale‘ – and I’m excited about playing the rarely-heard extended live version of the song with its extra lyrics.

As for our ‘Story Behind the Song‘?  ‘Glass Onion‘ was a ‘tease’ by the Beatles relating to the mystery behind the greatest hoax in rock’n’roll history: the ‘Paul is Dead‘ rumour.  I’ll dig into some of the juiciest and strangest parts of that worldwide obsession – on its 52nd anniversary. This will be a terrific show and I hope you’ll join me (and Norm) this Sunday from 2:00 to 4:30. (Oct.17).
