ROLLING STONES’ 60th ANNIVERSARY SALUTE – PART ONE

It was July 12th 1962 when they first played together under their new name ‘The Rollin’ Stones’ at London’s Marquee Club.  Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Brian Jones were the core of the band – Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts would join later. But it’s that July date – now 60 years ago – that we, and the band itself, are celebrating.  I’ve got a two-part feature with their 1960s hits highlighting ‘Part One’ – this Sunday (July 10th).  Next Sunday (July 17th) is Vintage Favourites Show #800 since I launched the feature in March 2007. And I’m delighted to feature ‘Part Two’ of ‘The Rolling Stones’ Story’ as the highlight of Show #800.  More about that in next week’s post.

In this week’s ‘Part One’ I’ll play ten important milestone songs including their first three UK hits – written by Chuck Berry, Lennon & McCartney, and Buddy Holly, and several others of increasing complexity – and iconic status – from the decade’s darker second-half.  You’ll hear how they earned their title as ‘the world’s greatest rock’n’roll band’.

I’ll also have birthday salutes to David Wilcox, Linda Ronstadt and The Byrds’ Roger McGuinn.  I’ll remember the legendary ‘Your Hit Parade’ debuting on television this week in 1950, as well as Queen’s historic performance at Live Aid – often called the greatest live concert of all time. And this week’s ‘Story Behind the Song‘ reveals Woody Guthrie’s epic ‘This Land is Your Land’, as we note the folk legend’s birth 110 years ago this week.  Coincidentally his son, Arlo, turns 75 this same week – so we’ll play a song by him as well.

It sounds like a great show – I hope you’ll join me – this Sunday from 2:00 to 4:30.
