SHOW #800 – ROLLING STONES’ 60th ANNIVERSARY – PART TWO
This Sunday (July 17th) marks the 800th show in my long-running ‘Vintage Favourites’ series; broadcast every Sunday afternoon, with a unique and different show every weekend, since its launch in March 2007. I’m proud of this milestone. That’s a lot of shows, a lot of special themes, tons of research, writing – over 4 million words, at an average of 5000 words per show – and of course, recording.
I’d like to sincerely thank my Zoomer Radio team-mates who help me with the show every week, including Production Manager Joel Schonewille and Music Programmer Paul Sereda – they administer new songs added to the show; Digital Content Producer Justin Ecock – who uploads the scheduled music for my show; promo-producer Kelly Robotham; and Marketing & Digital Media Coordinator Jordan Chakravarty who creates and manages the show’s on-line web-site info. And the various board producers Carlos, Owen, and Ian who run the in-studio operations during my program. Thanks as well to all our on-air hosts for their supportive promos. And my sincere appreciation to Assistant General Manager and Program Director Paul Thomas, and especially to ZoomerMedia Founder and Executive Producer Moses Znaimer – ‘Vintage Favourites’ greatest supporter.
I’m also proud of – and humbled by – the Vintage Favourites audience. Thanks to you, I get to host one of Zoomer Radio’s best-rated weekend programs for all these years; and I’m also humbled by the support and affection from our most loyal listeners. You know who you are – and I want you to know I appreciate your listening, your feedback and comments. You are the inspiration for the show. Thank you.
With this 800th show, I’m concluding the two-part salute to The Rolling Stones celebrating their 60th anniversary. Last week we heard their run through the Sixties, from simple cover versions of earlier songs, to their own constantly evolving productions and complex themes of youthful alienation and dis-satisfaction, culminating in such dark masterpieces as ‘Sympathy for the Devil’, ‘Gimme Shelter’ and ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’. In ‘Part Two’ we step into the Seventies, with their own record label, and exciting new horizons to explore, and concert-halls to fill as ‘the world’s greatest rock’n’roll band’. One of those venues was Toronto’s own El Mocambo in 1977; the recording of their live show at The ElMo has recently been released, and I’ll feature some of those exciting tracks.
As well, birthday salutes to Ian Thomas and Rufus Wainwright, and to three icons each turning 75: Queen’s Brian May and fellow guitarist extraordinaire Carlos Santana and the Eagles drummer Don Henley. ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ ‘My Happiness’ is really the story of how Elvis Presley’s career began – it was his very first private recording this week in 1953 – and it makes for a great story. I hope you’ll join me for this 800th edition of ‘Vintage Favourites’. Cheers !
