BIGGEST HITS OF A HALF-CENTURY – THE FORTIES

Recently I’ve taken you on musical adventures searching for ‘the lost hits’ of past decades. This time, I invite you on a different journey – a musical rocket-ride through the top of the pop charts across a half-century.  I’ll play each year’s biggest hit from 1940 through 1989 in five features – each dedicated to a different decade. First up – The Biggest Hits of The Forties.  The war years were dominated by big band swing, but in the post-war years, the music softened and a wave of romantic crooners scored the biggest hits. Ten great songs – each the year’s biggest hit – take us through Part One of this five-part series – The Forties.

I also have a treat for Leonard Cohen fans, as we approach the 88th anniversary of his birth. We’ll go back to his Live in Dublin album recorded this month in 2013 for 5 great songs. Plus: ‘This Week in Zoomer Music‘ remembers Jim Croce and Gerry Marsden and tells ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ ‘Black and White’.  Three Dog Night took it to #1 50 years ago this week – but its story starts almost two decades earlier – amid the civil rights struggle, and in particular, the landmark US. Supreme Court decision that banished school segregation in 1954. I’ll play you two versions of the song, including one by its co-writer, and the better-known pop hit by Three Dog Night.

Please join me for ‘Vintage Favourites’ this Sunday from 2:00 to 4:30pm.
