PRISON SONGS AND JOHN McDERMOTT

I’ve always been fascinated by stories of prison breaks, and I’ve had the chance to visit what was once the world’s most famous (or infamous) maximum security prison at Alcatraz.  That ‘inescapable’ prison on ‘The Rock’ in San Francisco Bay was shut down March 21st, 1963 – next week marks the 60th anniversary. I was inspired to gather some classic prison songs, and some fascinating tales of prisoners – not always deserving their fate. I hope you’ll join me for a fascinating hour of songs and stories – some are funny, others chilling, all worth hearing.

In the early days of this radio station – in the early 2000s – one of our favourite singers was John McDermott. We often played his music; in fact his ‘Daughter of Mine’ was, for a time, our most-requested song. John’s turning 68 next week, and I’ll have a half-hour of his wonderful songs featuring his wide range from Lightfoot and Beatle covers to Brazilian samba and the song that started his career – ‘Danny Boy’.

There’s also ‘Our Sunday Best – A Century of #1 Hits‘ sweeping us along from Benny Goodman in 1936 through the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s till Celine Dion in 1996.  And I’ll tell ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ ‘Ballad of The Green Berets’ – the ‘counter-punch’ to the ‘counterculture’ protest movement of the mid-60s – that took a pro-soldier anthem to the top of the pop charts?

That’s all on the next edition of Vintage Favourites, Sunday (March 19th) from 2:00 to 4:30pm.
