This may be a surprise to you – but there is an annual day set aside by the United Nations to celebrate and salute radio. ‘World Radio Day’ is held each year on February 13th – the anniversary of the launch of United Nations Radio back in 1946.
And there’s a theme for each year; in the past these themes have included ‘Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment’; ‘Youth and Radio’; ‘Radio in Times of Emergency and Disaster’; ‘Radio and Sports’; and ‘Radio and Diversity’.
This year’s theme is ‘A Century of Informing, Entertaining, and Educating’.  It ‘shines a broad floodlight on Radio’s remarkable past, relevant present and promise of a dynamic future.’ (unquote)
So I’ve come up with a 21-song salute to the radio – with songs from across the decades and music genres; from swing to rock’n’roll; Glenn Miller to Chuck Berry and Queen; Monty Python and some legendary radio personalities from Alan Freed and Wolfman Jack to our own Robbie Lane and Frank Proctor.  Sure I’ll get a little into the history of radio, but never fear, there won’t be any test-questions, and I’ll keep the music playing – or as we used to say ‘the hits just keep on coming!’.
Please ‘turn on your radio’ and celebrate ‘World Radio Day’ with this unique station – and our special show ‘Vintage Favourites’ – from 2:00 to 4:30 this Sunday (Feb.11)
