The first fixed link connection with Toronto Island is now in place since the Great Storm of 1852 severed the previous sand spit connection over a century and a half ago.

Passengers travelling via Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport no longer have to take the 90-second ferry across The Western Channel of Lake Ontario to get to and from the city. A pedestrian tunnel connecting the airport to mainland Toronto, in construction since 2012, opened last week.

The $82 million tunnel connects travellers through a combination of elevators, automated sidewalks and escalators within six minutes. The new infrastructure, which complements the existing ferry service, is naturally being welcomed by Porter Airlines, whose hub is located in the terminal. The complete journey through the pedestrian tunnel will take less than six minutes, travelling under approximately 32 feet of water, and 66 feet of rock and river bed.

Or of course you can still take the scenic ferry ride and have the distinction of having voyaged on what is in the Guinness Record Book as the world’s shortest ferry ride…
