Also on the program we have Canadian Singer, Songwriter, Guitarist and Painter Bill Barnes. Born in Port Glasgow, Scotland, Barnes settled in the Toronto area as a young boy with his parents and older brother. He became interested in the guitar in his early 20s. Gordon Lightfoot and his music were a tremendous influence on him. Bill and his wife saw Gordon live at Massey Hall and they became hooked. Bill continued learning the guitar over the years with his own style and expertise. Even though he professes “that I am not an accomplished musician, far from it, however I know enough to entertain and play in a band.”

Here is one of Bill’s paintings, entitled “GRAND EVENING”.

Bill became the lead rhythm and vocal of a few bands that played in pubs over a span of years. About 20 years ago, Bill formed a band with a good friend, (a Bass player) and they expanded to a 4 piece and began to play cover tunes in various venues. Eagles to Elvis to Buffett to Cash to CCR to Beatles to Lightfoot to you name it, they would tackle it. They call themselves RIVERBOAT after the Riverboat coffee house, a venue that he would have loved to play in.

Following 911, Bill composed a song that was submitted by his daughter to John Oakley CFRB 1010. Much to Bill’s surprise and amazement, he got a call the next day to come down to the studios and sit beside John Oakley and play it live on the radio with his guitar. Many callers called in with exuberance wanting a copy of Bill’s song “SONS OF LIBERTY”. After the 911 experience, Bill started composing tunes writing about matters close to his heart.

A few years ago, Bill and his wife were at THE HUGH’S ROOM for dinner and a show and we were very impressed with an amazing guitarist and entertainer Wendell Ferguson. They approached him and asked if he would be interested in helping produce and play backup on a CD of Bill’s original music.

Because he sounds a lot like Lightfoot, their band started doing Lightfoot tribute nights, which were the most fun nights that he can remember. But he fully acknowledges that “there will always only be one Gord, the master.”

Listeners will hear some of the tracks from Bill’s CD “THE WAY I FEEL”, which Bill claims, “reflect my emotions and feelings with respect to special events in my life. I did my best to sound like “me” this time as these tunes were from my heart and no one else.”

Now in 2021, scrambling around Covid, he is still playing “with the same fellows and we are getting a little older but still having a good time knocking out some tunes.”
