Provincial police are ”cautiously optimistic” that Ontario will see the fewest road fatals this year – where victims were not buckled up – which would set a record.

As of Sunday, 32 have died this year in crashes where they were not wearing seatbelts.

There were 73 in 2013 and 68 in 2009, which is the lowest number of seatbelt-related fatals since 2005.

The OPP launch their annual seatbelt safety blitz Wednesday.

Remember you can be fined $200 and two-demerit points for failing to buckle up.

While this year’s numbers look good, Deputy Commissioner Brad Blair says they’d still like to see everyone comply with the law.
