NO MAIL BY MONDAY A POSSIBILITY

With the rejection by the postal union of a binding arbitration proposal from Canada Post, it’s a stalemate in talks to keep the mail flowing.

The Canadian Union of Postal Wokers had proposed a 30-day cooling off period which would have prevented a strike or lockout for another month while the two sides worked on an agreement.

Canada Post insisted that the union agree to binding arbitration if no agreement was reached in the 30-day period, but CUP-W said no because it didn’t want to give up its right to a negotiated settlement.

Key issues stalling an agreement are employee pension plans and wage parity.

A notice of a lockout for Monday has been issued by Canada Post.
