Thornhill’s Milos Raonic became the first Canadian player to reach a men’s final at a tennis Grand Slam event, but in the end it was local favourite Andy Murray who won at Wimbledon Sunday.
Murray defeated Raonic 6-4, 7-6, 7-6 in winning his second championship at the All England Club.
Raonic did make history by becoming the first Canadian to make it to the men’s final. He had to beat one of the game’s greats, 7-time champion Roger Federer of Switzerland to get there.
Another tennis star from the Greater Toronto Area did win a championship at Wimbldon Sunday.
17-year-old Denis Shapovalov from Richmond Hill won the boy’s title, defeating Australian Alex DeMinaur in straight sets.
