Critics say Premier Kathleen Wynne is misleading people about the province’s economic performance. Wynne said last week that the province’s first quarter economic growth this year was 0.8 percent, or three per cent at an annualized rate. She added that the numbers are better than the rest of Canada, the U.S and all other G-7 countries. But several American States, including Arkansas, Washington and Oregon all had annualized growth of 3.9 per cent in the first quarter. Progressive Conservative finance critic Vic Fedeli calls it a “stretch” for Wynne to say 0.8 per cent growth in one-quarter will stay the same throughout the year and result in three per cent annual growth. In his defence of Wynne, Finance Minister Charles Sousa says the province always compares its performance to the United States as a whole, not to individual states, adding there was no attempt to mislead anyone.
