Ontario Provincial Police are reminding drivers to obey the Move Over law ahead this Civic Day long weekend. The law requires motorists to slow down when approaching an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway when its lights are activated and to move over one lane if possible. Last year saw one of the highest numbers of charges laid against drivers who failed to slow down and move over for roadside emergency vehicles since the law was introduced in 2003. Failure to move over can result in fines from $400 to $2,000 and three demerit points for a first offence. The O-P-P says five of its officers have died when they or their roadside vehicles were struck by approaching vehicles since 1989. Officers will also be on the road focusing on offences such as impaired driving, seat belts, distracted driving and aggressive driving. Police will be patrolling the water making sure boaters are following safe boating practices. The OPP say boating deaths are preventable and that nearly half of those fatalities are attributed to the alcohol.
