Transport Minister Marc Garneau says he wants to find out exactly what led to the derailment of a CP Rail freight train in mid-town Toronto early Sunday. He says if action is needed, his department will move fast. Part of a Canadian Pacific freight train derailed in the city’s mid-town, near Bathurst and Dupont. Rail officials say the incident posed no threat to public safety although CP admits there was a small diesel leak when the two locomotives struck another C-P freight train. Toronto City councillor Josh Matlow, who represents that area, told “Fight Back” with Libby Znaimer, this serves as a wake up call to act quickly to improve rail safety. Matlow says the trains run just feet from residential homes in that neighbourhood. He suggests the freight rail lines be used instead for commuter train service to solve the subway overcrowding. Another city councillor, Joe Mihevc is calling for a new national policy because the current legislation doesn’t allow local governments to know what is being transported for national security reasons. For many concerned residents, this weekend’s derailment brought back memories of the Lac Megantic disaster that killed 47 people.
