Road safety is one of the main issues in Toronto’s municipal election campaign. A new survey finds that dozens of candidates running for council seats in Toronto have pledged to boost road safety efforts across the city if elected. The Toronto Centre for Active Transportation found that of the 80 council and mayoral candidates who responded, most support the city’s traffic calming process. And many also support the city’s bicycle network plan. Jennifer Keesmaat is the only mayoral candidate who’s pledged to drop speeds to 30 kilometres per hour for all residential roads. Mayor John Tory would only say he’s open to a recommendation about reducing speed limits. More than a dozen incumbent councillors from the city’s suburbs did not respond to the survey.
