Premier Doug Ford defends new legislation introduced today that would give his cabinet the power to extend emergency orders for up to 2 years.

“We’re doing it to help the people, I don’t want a power grab, I’m just not into big government” said Ford.

Solicitor General Sylvia Jones says the bill would allow the government to extend or amend some emergency orders a month at a time, and would expire expiring a year after it’s passed.

“I don’t think there’s anybody in Ontario who wants to go back to a full shut down and the orders we’re putting in place ensure that in measured ways, we can make sure we can protect certain regions or certain businesses if the need arises,” Jones told reporters.

Doug Ford says the bill is needed to protect Ontario in the event of a resurgence in COVID-19 cases.

The legislation would allow the province to issue emergency orders even after a state of emergency is ended, which is not allowed under current legislation.
