As the devastation caused by COVID-19 continues in more than 200 Ontario long term care homes, the related death toll in the second wave is nearing the number of deaths in the first wave.

According to the Ontario Long Term Care Ministry website, the number of nursing home residents who’ve died after contracting COVID-19 over the course of the pandemic is now at 3,579; 1,817 in the first wave and 1,761 in the second wave.

Currently, 224 homes are in outbreak including Roberta Place in Barrie where 63 people have died and who’s owners are now facing a $50-million dollar class action lawsuit.

Lawyers for family members of residents say those in charged failed to take basic precautionary measures against COVID-19.

One of the infected residents is 73-year-old Beryl Taggart whose son Jeremy Taggart (of Our Lady Peace) expressed his disappointment with the lack of action while on Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer.

“People were actually not properly isolated and that’s my biggest problem with this whole thing is just the fact that there was no help from day one to help quarantine this virus properly. There was a lot of promises happening from Fullerton and Ford in terms of taking care of this and having people in place but this is not the case and it was a real failure and it’s going to keep happening until something is done about it,” Taggart explained. The outbreak at Roberta Place began on January 8th. An inspection flagging violations of public health measures was conducted on January 12th and 13th.

Listen for more on the class action lawsuit Wednesday on Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back after the noon news.
