If you pick up a hard copy of the newspaper on Thursday, you’ll notice the front pages of both the Toronto Star and National Post are blank.
John Boynton is CEO of Torstar and says, “no, it’s not a mistake!”
He writes the move was made deliberately to make a very important point in a dramatic way, that local newspapers and local headlines are disappearing across Canada as Facebook and Google take the news produced by Canadians, put it on their sites, and don’t pay for it.
At the same time, these internet titans drain off more than 80 percent of all digital advertising revenue in Canada.
The campaign by News Media Canada includes an open letter to all members of parliament calling on Ottawa to do what lawmakers did in Australia and adopt legislation that allows newspapers to negotiate a fair price for use of their content, with massive fines if Google and Facebook refuse to cooperate.
Boynton encourages you the reader to reach out to your local MP and tell them you want Ottawa to level the playing field.
