No idea how many doses of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine will arrive in the coming weeks and the U.S. drug maker has not said why deliveries to Canada are being reduced.
Major General Dany Fortin, the military commander in charge of the country’s vaccine rollout, says 180,000 doses arrived this morning, but, the government has no ”visibility” on how many more shots will be delivered this month and next.
Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has already warned provinces to expect disruptions with the next scheduled delivery, set for February 22.
”Moderna reduced shipment quantities for the week of 1-7 February (from 230,400 to 180,000 doses).  The week of 22 February will also be impacted, but Moderna cannot confirm allocations for that week yet,” according to PHAC.
Moderna delivers shots every three weeks.
Health Canada’s expected to approve AstraZeneca’s vaccine in the ”coming days,” but, Fortin says he doesn’t know how many, if any, doses of that vaccine would be delivered in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Canada now ranks 33rd in the world in the number of shots administered per capita.
