With just over 21,000 COVID-19 related deaths in Canada to date, it comes as no surprise how much more deadly the new coronavirus is than the flu.

In a new study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, researchers looked at hospitalizations for the flu between November of 2019 and June of 2020 in seven large Canadian hospitals.

They found that COVID-19 is 3.5 times more deadly than influenza. The scientists also found COVID-19 patients needed more intensive care treatment and stayed in hospital longer than those with the flu.

A doctor at Toronto’s St. Michael’s Hospital says “we can now conclude definitively that COVID-19 is much more severe than seasonal influenza.”
