Stay-at-home orders are being extended in Toronto, Peel and North Bay regions until at least March 8th. York region moves to the RED zone on Monday which allows restaurants, gyms, hair salons and retail stores to open with strict capacity limits.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says it was a difficult but necessary decision as COVID rates remain well above the provincial average in Toronto and Peel.

“We are very well aware of the variants of concern, we know that cases can increase quickly and that’s why we’re being very slow and very careful what we’re doing and there’s also the emergency brake that can be applied by the Chief Medical Officer of Health.”

Premier Doug Ford’s government sided with top health officials in Toronto and Peel had called for the order to be extended saying loosening measures too soon would lead to more illness and death.

“If you want to compare Toronto with Northern region, the size of France, that may have a few cases, with the geographical size of Ontario, the vast majority of cases are in Toronto, Peel and York is not too far behind them,” said  Ford.
