An Ontario Canada Post work site is excluded from an ongoing inspection blitz of similar workplaces because it is federally regulated.
More than 300 staff at the postal service’s Gateway facility in Mississauga have tested positive for COVID-19 and one person has died since the start of the year.
But an ongoing provincial inspection and ticketing blitz of warehouses and distribution centres in Peel Region won’t visit the site because the federal government is in charge of regulating it.
Employment and Social Development Canada says the federal labour program engaged with the site several times over the last year, including to follow up on preventive inspection measures and the workers’ death.
But the department has declined to share information on those visits including whether any enforcement action took place, citing privacy laws.
The president of the union representing postal workers says the virus doesn’t discriminate between workplaces and neither should inspections.
