Calling it the first of its kind legislation in Canada, Doug Ford’s government has unveiled new anti-trafficking legislation.

“Our province has become a hub of human trafficking with the most police reported incidents in the entire country,” said Premier Doug Ford.

The bill will introduce broad reforms to give police greater powers to access information, to get help for victims sooner and to hold more offenders accountable.

“Strengthen the ability of Children’s Aids Societies and law enforcement to protect exploited children, support more survivors and the people who support them in obtaining restraining orders against traffickers and provide law enforcement with more tools to local victims and crack down on traffickers,” explained Solicitor General Sylvia Jones.

The Centre to End Human Trafficking released a report that identifies highway 401 as well as highways 11 and 17 connecting Sudbury and Thunder Bay through Northern Ontario and onward to Winnipeg as the routes used by traffickers.

Today is Human Trafficking Awareness Day
