The largest industrial union in North America is vowing to protect Canadian businesses and workers from the growing peril of protectionism in the United States.

United Steelworkers international president Tom Conway issued a joint statement Thursday with Canadian counterpart Ken Neumann aimed at making Canada’s case for an exemption from U.S. President Joe Biden’s “Buy America” regulations.

Neumann urged Ottawa to get more aggressive in its efforts to prevent illegal dumping of foreign products to ensure they don’t find their way south…a persistent concern in the United States.

The statement from the union came one day after Biden delivered a long-awaited two trillion dollar infrastructure plan that included a now-familiar “Buy American” caveat.

International Trade Minister Mary Ng testified Thursday before a House of Commons committee exploring the Canada-U.S. relationship.

Ng says the best defence will be the so-called “Team Canada” approach that proved so effective during the recent marathon NAFTA negotiations.
