Matthew Fisher, who witnessed the most significant and unspeakable stories of the last half century, has died following a short illness in Ottawa.
A nose for news he somehow managed to be in the right place at the right time.
He was on vacation in India in 1984 when Indira Gandhi was assassinated, then five years later while vacationing in California there was the earthquake that shook San Francisco, and he also happened to be in Washington, in a hotel near the Pentagon, when it was hit by a plane in the 9/11 terror attack.
He also reported on the election of Nelson Mandela in South Africa, the funerals of Yasser Arafat, Mother Teresa and Princess Diana.
Matthew Fisher was also a presenter at Moses Znaimer’s ideacity.
The ZoomerMedia founder tweets
”Matthew Fisher was a singular voice in the conformist choir of mainstream reporting in Canada.  Intrepid + worldly, he was the last of Canada’s foreign correspondents.  We were lucky to have him dazzle us twice @ideacity with his adventures, and misadventures.  RIP my friend.”
