While COVID 19 is spreading fastest among people under 30 during the third wave, the pandemic is still hitting Ontario seniors the hardest.
Leading geriatrician Dr. Samir Sinha at the Sinai Health System and University Health Network says for some reason this is not making the news.
Dr Sinha says despite a vaccination program targeting people in their 60s, 70s and 80s, these demographics continue to suffer the worst outcomes more often.
Since March 1st, the majority of new cases have been among those in their 30s or younger, but people in this age group are far less likely to die a COVID related death than older people.
Conversely, people 60 and older have made up only 15 percent of new cases in the past six weeks, but those cases are responsible for nearly 90-percent of deaths.
Dr. Sinha says any death is horrible, but people need to know that every day, there are at least a dozen older people dying after contracting the virus.
