Health Canada says a new, extremely rare blood clotting issue might be connected to the AstraZeneca vaccine, but the agency maintains the benefits still far outweigh the risks.
”Get whatever vaccine is available to you. It’s that simple,” says Health Canada’s chief medical adviser, Dr. Supriya Sharma.
”We know the risks of getting these side effects from the vaccine are very rare.”
These clots, now known as vaccine-induced thrombocytopenia (VIPIT), occur when the immune system starts attack blood platelets.
While scientists now know what’s happening, they still have not yet been able to explain how the vaccine may be causing it.
Health Canada also says there’s no evidence showing certain people are more at risk than others, and that the AstraZeneca vaccine will remain authorized for all adults in the country.
The decision comes the day after Canada reported its first case of a blood clot in a patient who received the shot.
