Deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo says the prime minister and government are looking at COVID-19 data and a decision to do more at the border is imminent.
Currently, Ottawa bans most non-essential foreign travellers from entering Canada, and requires those allowed in to take multiple COVID tests and complete a 14-day quarantine.
But some argue that’s not enough.
Premiers Doug Ford and Francois Legault of Quebec have sent a letter to the prime minister asking that international flights be further reduced temporarily, and that there be more land border protection because of the surging number of cases of the variants of concern, and the ”variant of interest” detected in India.
A ”variant of interest” means it’s ”suspected” to either be more contagious than the initial strain, cause more severe disease or possibly ward off protection from vaccines.
The head of Canada’s vaccine rollout says the situation in India means shipments of the AstraZeneca vaccine from Serum Institute of India are on hold.
India is reporting a global record of over 314,000 new cases in the last day with more than 2,100 deaths.
