Thanks to the new Section 22 order in Peel Region, about 90 postal workers are isolating at their homes as public health staff shut down a shift at a mail facility in Mississauga because of a COVID-19 outbreak.

Over the last week, 12 employees have tested positive for the virus at the Toronto Exchange Office within Canada Post’s Gateway West facility on Dixie Road.

The new critieria allows for a workplace shutdown in both Peel and Toronto when there are five or more cases of COVID.

CUPW President Qaiser Maroof represents workers at the Gateway Facility and is appealing for a mobile vaccination clinic to immunize the employees there.

Peel’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Lawrence Loh, says this will happen in coordination with the Ministry of Health, if vaccine supply allows and if it makes sense.

“We at this point in time have identified three workplaces where we’re rolling out vaccines; Amazon, Maple Leaf and Maple Lodge, but I think it’s very clear that those provincially directed sites that there is likely significant demand well beyond these three sites,” Dr. Loh explained.

Amazon and Canadian Tire are among the other businesses in Peel Region that have been hit with partial workplace closures over the past few days.
