Ontario’s science advisers say COVID cases are decreasing as the province remains under a stay-at-home order but further limits on essential workplaces are needed to bring rates under control.

Dr. Steini Brown released new projections that show there is ‘clear reason for hope’ but stressed the need to be cautious.

“Cases are cresting right now but they’re cresting at a very high level, ICU occupancy is at record highs and continues to climb, and our system is under incredible pressure right now, workplace mobility is too high, but keeping sick workers at home will help control cases, clearing the surgical backlog will be an enormous challenge.”

That surgical backlog has now reached 257,536 procedures. Although the third wave is creasing, 20 of Ontario’s 34 public health units are still seeing an increase in cases.

The new modelling shows rates are flattening but pockets of growth remain in hot spots, with positivity rates still high in Peel Region and Toronto.

Variants now make up 90 percent of cases.
