We find out on Friday what members of the Long Term Care COVID-19 Commission have to say about the Ford government’s handling of the pandemic in their final report.

More than 3700 long term care residents have died in Ontario after contracting COVID-19, despite government promises to improve conditions in Long Term Care homes.

The governing Ford PCs have said they will provide support for hiring more personal support workers and providing four hours of care per day per resident, but that promise won’t be fully implemented for four years.

Donna Duncan is the CEO of the Long Term Care Association and told Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer, we all failed our seniors.

“We can’t lose sight of the fact these are human beings and we’ve all got to retain our empathy and compassion for the people who died, their families and front line staff, who’ve just been traumatized through this,” Duncan explained.

What’s really needed, according to York University Professor Pat Armstrong, are improvements in staffing levels, pay and benefits.

“We need to keep the focus on making them (long term care homes) as good as they can be and making them places to live,” Armstrong told CBC Radio.

Commissioners interviewed a range of people and groups, from LongTerm Care Minister Merrilee Fullerton to doctors and personal support workers and to family members of residents who were ill.

They have already released two sets of interim recommendations.
