Ontario’s top doctor says the province is “bending the curve” on the third wave but he wants cases well below 1,000 before lifting any restrictions but the 7-day moving average is now over 3,000.

“And the variants is a new issue and much more readily transmitted so we have to be a lot more cautious, but in the past we thought can we get below 1,000 down to 500 to 600 a day,  if 70 percent of the population is vaccinated, I think this is not only reasonable, it’s achievable,” said Dr. David Williams, Chief Medical Officer of Health.

Williams says the province is still looking at the metrics needed to lift the stay at home order but says schools would be the first to open.

Earlier, health minister Christine Elliott said the stay-home order will likely to be extended to June 2 or until there’s a “significant drop in the number of cases. “
