He had an acting career that spanned the late 1930’s to TV’s “Modern Family” and put him in the company of Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock and Charlie Chaplin.

Norman Lloyd has died in Los Angeles.

More recent TV viewers will remember Lloyd as Dr. Daniel Auschlander on the 1982-99 series “St. Elsewhere.”

The wiry, 5-foot-5 Lloyd, whose energy was boundless off-screen as well, continued to play tennis into his 90s.  His final role was in 2015 in the Amy Schumer comedy “Trainwreck.”

On Broadway, he played the Fool in “King Lear” in 1950, co-starred with Jessica Tandy in the comedy “Madam, Will You Walk” and directed Jerry Stiller in “The Taming of the Shrew” in 1957.
