The individual in charge of Canada’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout says his team is working on coming up with a plan on whether Canada should continue to receive doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Major-General Dany Fortin said on Thursday, 655,000 doses of the vaccine had just arrived in Canada but they are not immediately being distributed to provinces.

“The situation with AstraZeneca is evolving,” Fortin explained, “and we will work with the provinces in terms of their supply needs. We want to assure everyone that sufficient supply will be available for those who want a second dose of AstraZeneca or who cannot take an mRNA vaccine.”

Fortin’s comments come as several provinces, including Ontario, have stopped giving first doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, citing an increase in an extremely rare but serious blood-clotting issue linked to the shot.

The number has risen to 28 suspected cases nationwide, 18 confirmed with 10 under investigation.

More than two-million people have received the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in Canada to date.
