42 years in the making, the food and drink cultures of Montreal and Toronto will be on the line as the two cities’ hockey teams go head to head in the NHL playoffs.
The Leafs and Canadiens haven’t played a playoff series since 1979 and the two cities mayors are wagering on the outcome of the series.
Mayor John Tory is confident he’ll be victorious over Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante but the stakes are high.
“We’ve bet most of all bragging rights,” Tory told CP24. “Secondly, there’s a flag raising to take place so I’m looking forward to seeing her raise the Toronto Maple Leafs flag in front of Montreal City Hall. And then the usual. The loser will send the winner some beer. In our case, we’d send some peameal bacon sandwiches from the St. Lawrence Market and she’d send some smoked meat sandwiches from Montreal.”
Both mayors are also making $500 donations to the opposing city’s team charities with the loser having to drop an extra $500.
