As more Canadians get COVID-19 vaccines, the Trudeau Liberals in Ottawa are seeing a surge in approval for how the pandemic has been handled.

A new Angus Reid survey finds half of Canadians feel the federal government is doing a good job of handling the COVID-19 response, a 6-point increase from last month.

But this does not necessarily translate into voter support.

Ahead of a widely predicted 2021 federal election, 34 percent of Canadians say they would vote for the Liberals, which is a nearly identical percentage of those who say they would support the Erin O’Toole Conservatives.

But the Liberals continue to hold a considerable advantage in Ontario and Quebec with a greater political advantage than Conservative strongholds in the west.

As for the leaders themselves, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has an overall approval rating of 43 percent, up marginally from April, but less than the approval rating of NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh with 46 percent.

Erin O’Toole continues to lag behind with just 27 percent approval.
