Plenty of Zoomers will remember reading the children’s classic, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” to their kids.

The book’s author and illustrator, Eric Carle, has died.

Over his career, Carle’s works gave millions of children some of their earliest and most cherished literary memories.

Through books like “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” “Do You Want to Be My Friend?” and “From Head to Toe,” Carle introduced young people to universal themes in simple words and bright colours.

“The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” was published in 1969 and followed the metamorphosis of a green and red caterpillar into a proudly multi-colored butterfly.

In all Carle wrote and-or illustrated more than 75 books. One of his last was 2015’s “The Nonsense Show,” which centred on a parade of flying fish, cat-taming mice and circus animals.

Eric Carle died at his summer home in Massachusetts surrounded by his family. He was 91.
