Ontario’s chief medical officer of health is set to be replaced.

On Sunday, Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott confirmed chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams is retiring on June 25th, 2021.

Williams has been in the forefront of the province’s battle against COVID-19 but has faced ongoing criticism.

He was lambasted by the COVID-19 Long-Term Care Commission for repeatedly ignoring warnings from scientists, doctors, local public health officials and even the minister of long-term care as nursing home deaths soared early in the pandemic.

The province says Williams is being replaced by Dr. Kieran Moore.

Moore is currently the chief medical officer of health for Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox and Addington Public Health.

He will work alongside Williams for a few weeks, starting June 7th, to ensure a smooth transition.

While the province praised Williams’ leadership during the pandemic, critics have taken aim at his communication style and questioned his ability to stand up to Premier Doug Ford.

Williams issued a statement saying it has been an honour to serve in the role and thanked Ontarians for their resilience during the pandemic and for the support they have shown him
