Canadian icon Paul Soles, whose career spanned radio, TV, animation and theatre across Canada and the United States, passed away at the age of 90 last Wednesday in his Toronto home.
His obituaries seem to focus on his career as an actor, but he was actually far better known as co-host of the longtime CBC Network television daytime mainstay Take Thirty.
In fact, Paul was joined by a young Moses Znaimer in his first on camera job playing the bright young roving reporter to Paul and his co-host, Adrienne Clarkson.
Soles voiced the lead role in Stan Lee’s original Spider-Man becoming the first actor to play the teenage Peter Parker in in the 1960’s animated series. In a later interview, he revealed he was initially at a loss on how to portray the role, partly because he didn’t feel like a superhero growing up.
He also voiced Hermey the elf in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
Soles also starred as Nat in Herb Gardner’s I’m Not Rappaport at the Royal Alex in 1987.
He played the title character in Adam Pettle’s Zadie’s Shoes at the Winter Garden Theatre in 2002.
Soles was also the first host of the Canadian panel game show called This is the Law that ran in the ’70’s

The lights of the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto will be dimmed at 8pm Tuesday June 1st in memory of Paul Soles.
