The former chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is warning Canadians to be prepared for the discovery of more children’s remains at other residential school sites across Canada.

Retired Senator Murray Sinclair says the finding of remains of 215 children found at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in B.C. last week mirrors horrendous stories he’s heard from survivors of the school system.

He says survivors talked about children who suddenly went missing, including stories of mass burial sites.

“Now we’re beginning to see evidence of the numbers of children who died. We know that there were probably lots of sites similar to Kamloops that are going to come to light in the future, and we need to begin to prepare ourselves for that,” Sinclair explains.

Sinclair says all of Canada needs to appreciate the magnitude of the truth of the residential-school system experience.

Meantime, at the Ryerson University School of Journalism, it’s been decided the department’s two publications will drop any reference to the man for which Ryerson University is named.

The reference to Egerton Ryerson is being removed as he was among the architects of the residential school system.

His statue at Ryerson University in Toronto has been vandalized with red paint and graffiti in the aftermath of the discovery of the Kamloops’ mass grave.
