They handed out the Junos last night for the 50th time.

Canadian music legend Buffy Ste Marie, opened the show on a very somber note, invoking the memory of the 215 indigenous children whose bodies are buried in unmarked graves at the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia.  She said finding the bodies may come as a shocking revelation to some, but it doesn’t come as any surprise to native Canadians.

Other highlights of the show included Jann Arden being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and The Tragically Hip being given the Humanitarian Award.

The classical Album of the Year Vocal or Choral; wen to “Massenet; Thais” by Erin Wall, Joshua Hopkins, Andrew Staples, Toronto Mendelssohn Choir with Toronto Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir Andrew Davis Chandos

Toronto’s “The Weeknd” was named Artist of the Year.
