It’s taken 14 years, but a settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit against the federal government involving hundreds of First Nations people left out of residential-school compensation.
It was filed by Indigenous students known as “day scholars,” who attended the notorious residential schools but returned to their homes at night.
Each survivor will receive $10,000 in compensation and Ottawa will also invest 50M into a Day Scholars Revitalization Fund.
Two of the school survivors say they’re happy to finally be recognized for the pain and horrors they endured after fighting for over a decade to receive compensation.
