Ottawa is creating a federal policy to define senior abuse. Seniors Minister Deb Shulte made the announcement on this ‘World Elder Abuse Awareness Day’ amid shocking data that shows one in six seniors globally are abused. And that number has spiked 250 percent since then.
“With the number of seniors increasing to close to a quarter of Canada’s population by 2030, senior abuse is also increasing,” explained Minister Shulte. “Senior abuse has harmed too many older Canadians for too long yet there’s no one accepted definition of abuse across the country or around the world.”
And the government wants input from all Canadians especially seniors and marginalized older adults through a website now live thru July 14th. Click the link here
Minister Shulte says she supports criminal penalties for those who commit elder abuse.
