Whitby, Ontario based writer Canisia Lubrin is this year’s Canadian winner of the Griffin Poetry Prize.
She receives $65,000 for her poem “The Dyzgraphxst” awarded during a virtual ceremony on Wednesday. Jurors hailed Lubrin’s sophomore collection as a “spectacular feat of architecture called a poem.”
The poem is set against the backdrop of contemporary capitalist fascism, nationalism and the climate disaster, where the central figure grapples with understanding their existence.
The international prize, also worth $65,000 went to Belarusian poet Valzhyna Mort for “Music for the Dead and Resurrected.”
The Griffin is billed as the world’slargest prize for a first-edition single collection of poetry written in or translated into English.
