She was born in Nashville, grew up in Japan and called Calgary home.
Renowned guitarist and blues singer Ellen McIlwaine has died.
She was known for playing a mean slide guitar. Over the course of her career she traded licks with the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Taj Mahal, recorded a number of collaborative and solo albums and and won a Maple Blues life time achievement award in 2019.
McIlwaine started her career in Greenwich Village in the 1960s, recorded for Polygram and Universal and had an international fan base.
She lived in New York, Montreal and Toronto before settling in Calgary in the early 1990s.
Ellen McIlwaine was 75.
