Fewer Canadians now believe the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic is over, and it’s the Delta variant that is fueling the pessimism.

A new survey by Leger and the Association for Canadian Studies finds 54 percent of respondents say the worst of the COVID crisis is already over, compared with 63 percent who believed so in July.

The poll also found that 73 per cent of Canadians believe that governments should not lift all restrictions related to COVID-19 at the moment.

Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam warned on Friday that the country is potentially at the start of a fourth wave of COVID-19 that could lead to a sharp resurgence in cases if public health restrictions are lifted before vaccination rates pick up.

Meantime, a University of Calgary health policy expert says Alberta is likely the only jurisdiction in North America to eliminate practically all COVID-19 public health restrictions.

Lorian Hardcastle says the government is playing a game of Russian roulette in how it’s taking chances with a mutating virus and putting Albertans at risk.

Last week, Alberta dropped isolation requirements for people who are close contacts of positive cases.

On August 16th, those infected with COVID also won’t need to isolate.
