Canada’s women’s soccer team beat Sweden 3-2 on penalty kicks.
After finishing regulation and extra time tied at one, each team scored on two of five tries from the penalty spot, then a save by goalie Stephanie Labbe set the stage for Julia Grosso’s gold winning goal.
Sweden opened the scoring in the 34th minute on a goal by Stina Blackstenius.
Then in the 67th minute Captain Christine Sinclair was taken down in the penalty box.
A penalty kick was awarded after video review and Jessie Fleming tied it.
Canada won bronze in London in 2012, and again in Rio four years later, but third time proved to be the charm in Tokyo.
