”In spite of all of our efforts to proactively reach out to patients, to look at transferring doses into the health care system, and even donate them to other countries,” the head of the Ontario Pharmacists Association says ”tens of thousands” of doses of Moderna vaccine had to be thrown out due to expiry.
Justin Bates called it ”our worst case scenario” in announcing the news on Zoomer Radio’s ”Fight Back” with Libby Znaimer.
”Many thousands of doses had to be discarded because of the 30-day window.  They only have that runway when they arrive at the pharmacy in a thawed state,” Bates told AM 740.
He adds he’s ”disappointed” the government did not move quickly on allowing for third shots for immuno-compromised individuals, those in high-risk populations, which would have prevented the doses from being thrown out.
The head of the OPA points out ordering has been adjusted to avoid further wastage.
Bates cites brand awareness challenges and continued hesitancy and concerns about mixing vaccines as reasons for a ”steep” decline in demand for Moderna.
